1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger’s Tide (2011)
Director: Rob Marshall
Budget: $397 million
Gore Verbinski’s first two directorial ventures in the Pirates franchise, Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, had enormous budgets of 263 million USD and 341 million USD, respectively. However, Stranger Tides featured an even more expensive attempt to keep the Pirates series alive. The quest of Barbossa and Jack Sparrow to discover the magical fountain of youth cost almost 400 million USD.
In addition to the huge cost of production, the movie spent a lot on the marketing. Adjusted for inflation it’s considered the most expensive movie ever made with total costs of almost $410 million!
