8. Waterworld (1995)
Director: Kevin Reynolds
Budget: $271 million
This movie was a huge financial disappointment that was the most expensive movie ever made when it was released in 1995.
Shooting was done in Hawaii on a massive atoll which was built only for the movie production. The budget spiraled out of control due to Costner’s enormous salary, special effects, and expensive ideas like aerial shooting using helicopters and seaplanes. In addition to that, there was some bad luck as well; the set was sunk by three huge hurricanes during shooting.
While the movie debuted at number one in the box office, it was a short-term financial loss for the producers after such an expensive production! It would take years before home video sales and international tickets could recoup the studio’s gigantic investment.
