The 10 Most Expensive Movies of All Time

7. John Carter (2012)

Director: Andrew Stanton

Budget: $271 million

John Carter was the biggest box office disappointment in history at the time; this science-fiction adventure cost 200 million USD for the House of Mouse. Box office disappointments often have consequences. Rich Ross, then chairman of Disney Studios, resigned after the release of John Carter.

There was a reason behind the costs going out of hand. Primarily, it was because they had to shoot the movie twice because of unexpected problems in post production. Given the total cost, Disney wanted to bring in a box office of at least 600 million USD, but it didn’t even come close.
